Welcome to the Mecklenburg Lake District

The Mecklenburg Lake District is the biggest lakeland area in Central Europe. It offers visitors many and varied opportunities to explore this region of untouched countryside with all due discretion and be rewarded by unforgettable experiences. Far away from the clamour of the city and industry you can enjoy the tranquillity, the pure air and a landscape that has many stories to tell. Set out on a journey of discovery from Lake Mueritz, Germany’s biggest lake, to the Elbe River Country UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, from the Nature Parks Feldberg Lake District, Mecklenburg Switzerland / Lake Kummerow, Sternberg Lakeland and Nossentiner / Schwinzer Heath to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Schaalsee with the deepest lake in North Germany. Experience the biggest integrated lakeland region in Central Europe, set in an incomparable terminal-moraine landscape, which is an open invitation to linger and contemplate. Sparkling lake landscapes alternate with shady woodland, lush green willows with golden yellow fields of oilseed rape, blossoming heathland with white Baltic beaches. Camomile, poppies and cornflowers mark field-edges; gnarled fruit trees, crooked willows and mighty chestnuts line the roads and waysides.

In the many protected areas unique plant and animal kingdoms await you. This is the home of the otter, the sea eagle and the beaver, of now rare insects, amphibians and plants. Every year many thousands migratory birds find resting places here, observed by the loyal flock of their admirers. In the middle of this treasure house of water and forest lies the jewel among German regional capitals – Schwerin, the political and cultural centre of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a town not to be missed, with its romantic fairytale castle and many other attractions.

Everywhere in the region the visitor can discover the heritage of a thousand-year history: north German brick-Gothic architecture and vestibule houses, little village churches, convents and monasteries, windmills, formidable castles and fortresses, well-appointed museums, including farm museums; all of this is impressive even for the well-travelled visitor. Lavishly restored castles and manor-houses today accommodate hotels, restaurants, museums or artists’ studios and workshops. They transport the visitors back into a seemingly forgotten world and provide an enchanting backdrop to a dream holiday. The cultural heritage is well tended with a great deal of love and attention. Castle and manor-house festivals, village fêtes and town festivities, theatrical and sports events, countless open-air markets and horse shows provide entertainment, culinary treats and lots of fun. Summer is also the time for special concerts of old and new music in castles and manor houses, in parks and churches and even in barns.
Apart from a hundred and one opportunities to be pleasantly idle, this charming but modern holiday region offers many forms of active recreation. Skin diving courses, golf, angling, parachuting and sailing are just a few of the activities provided in the Mecklenburg Lake District. No matter whether you make your way by boat, on foot, on horseback or by bike, your thirst for action will be quenched.

The people here are warm-hearted and hospitable, though sometimes a little taciturn as the North German manner. They will certainly go out of their way to ensure that you spend an enjoyable holiday here. Let yourself be spoiled – by our regional cuisine, by friendly hosts in a holiday home; feel as noble as a lord in a castle hotel or as free and flexible as a camper on one of our beautifully situated campsites.

Judge for yourself: the Mecklenburg Lake District is a feel-good holiday region in every season of the year.
