South Mecklenburg´s Lake District

Europe’s biggest integrated lake and water sports region, the Mecklenburg Lake District, is a unique nature paradise. Its great and small lakes, which are often connected to each other by slow-flowing rivers and narrow canals, glitter between fragrant meadows, unspoilt woodland, moors and hills. Conditions here hold the promise of unforgettable water treks and are ideal for water trekkers. If they wish, they can trek from Berlin to Hamburg on the Mecklenburg lakes and waterways. Perhaps you’d like to try your hand as your own skipper on a houseboat or motorboat? The jewel of the South Mecklenburg Lake District is Lake Mueritz, Germany’s biggest lake, with an area of 112 square kilometres. The unspoilt countryside of the Mueritz National Park and the Nature Parks of Sternberg Lakeland, Nossentiner / Schwinzer Heath, Mecklenburg Switzerland / Lake Kummerow and Feldberg Lakeland are fascinating examples of a natural world that is still largely untouched and gently invites you to explore it and so leave the hectic atmosphere of daily life behind you.

As a holiday region with a high leisure rating the South Mecklenburg Lake District has something to offer everyone: cycling, hiking, horseriding, golfing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing … Make your own choice from a long list of options.
The heart of our region is and remains the world of nature but you should not miss the opportunity to visit our wonderful castles and manor-houses with their beautiful parks and gardens, our attractive towns with their restored old town-centres, our dreamy villages and our brick-Gothic buildings. Tradition is still alive there and in many other places in the South Mecklenburg Lake District, for example in the many small regional museums, local town or village festivities or in the regional cuisine.
