Mecklenburg’s Switzerland!

The gentle elevations that stretch across the countryside between Teterow and Malchin once gave this otherwise rather flat area in the north-east of Germany the surprising name of „Mecklenburg’s Switzerland“. The landscape is hilly and full of variety; it continually offers new views and perspectives. Bright yellow fields of oilseed rape compete with lush green meadows, deep-blue lakes with shady woodland. Poppies and cornflowers line field edges, country roads are bordered by gnarled fruit trees or majestic chestnut trees. Dreamy villages, in which barns built with field-stones are sometimes bigger that the churches, transport stress-plagued townsfolk into a half-forgotten world in which they rediscover an agreeable form of leisureliness.
Mecklenburg’s Switzerland enchants visitors not only by its charming countryside but also by its richness of cultural artefacts. Between the shimmering stretches of water and wooded hills visitors again and again encounter lovely old manor-houses and castles with old parks and lovingly tended gardens, or they discover an astonishing wealth of cultural monuments and art treasures, museums and galleries.
Wherever you look, you will find traces left by prominent figures such as Ernst Barlach, Fritz Reuter or the eminent economic and agricultural theorist and social reformer Johann Heinrich von Thünen; or you will encounter examples of lovingly preserved traditions and ways of life, for example Low-German folk art, whose great writers are unforgotten in the region.

For activity-orientated holidaymakers and particularly for water sports enthusiasts, Mecklenburg’s Switzerland is a real outdoor-activities paradise. They are sure to have a very good time here. Swimming, sailing, canoeing, diving, cycling, horse riding … all this and much more besides is available. The latest attraction is the 12 m aquatunnel in the nature and environment park in Guestrow that enables visitors to pass through under the river without so much as getting their feet wet.
